How to replace a speaker cone

Remove the damaged speaker diaphragm.

• Remove the speaker from the cabinet.

• Remove the gaskets. Use a chisel and hammer to drill under the gaskets and remove them.

• Use a hobby knife to cut through the outer edges of the cone and base near the dust cover.

• Trim the edges of the cobwebs and remove them. The spider web is the part that sits on the magnet. It is usually a dark yellow color.

• Remove the wire from the clip. Heat it with a soldering iron to remove it completely, then clean the clip with an iron. To do this, place the hot solder on the clamp. The residual solder should melt and stick to the clip with the iron.

• Carefully remove the dust cover and you should be able to lift it straight up.

What does a speaker cone do

The center of the speaker cone is fixed at one end and is moved back and forth by the voice coil. The flange of this cone is held in place by a suspension or a sealed surround. As the cone moves, it pushes and pulls on the surrounding air, creating a pressure wave in the air called sound.
