Global Trade Policy Trends: Tariff Adjustments And Multilateral Cooperation in Parallel

China Adjusts Import Tariffs to Promote Green Development

The Chinese Ministry of Finance announced that starting from January 1, 2025, it will implement temporary import tariff rates lower than the most-favored-nation (MFN) rates on 935 commodities, including recycled copper and aluminum raw materials. This move aims to increase the import of high-quality products, expand domestic demand, promote a high level of openness, and support green and low-carbon development. At the same time, China will raise import tariffs on goods such as molasses to optimize resource allocation and protect the environment.

U.S. Tariff Policy Adjustments Reshape Global Trade Dynamics

The U.S. has recently introduced new tariff policies affecting China, Canada, and Mexico. During his second term, President Donald Trump reaffirmed the "America First" policy by imposing a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and eliminating the de minimis rule that previously exempted Chinese goods valued under $800 from tariffs. This move has triggered countermeasures from China, marking the beginning of a new round of trade tensions.

Multilateral Trade Agreements Advance, Driving Globalization Forward

Despite the rise of protectionist measures in some countries, global trade remains strong, and the advancement of multilateral trade agreements is injecting new momentum into globalization. Emerging market countries continue to participate actively in agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), demonstrating firm support for open trade. Overall, globalization remains a driving force in these evolving economic strategies.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Protectionism and Global Cooperation

In the current complex international trade environment, countries must strike a balance between protecting domestic interests and maintaining a stable global trade system. By adjusting tariff policies and actively engaging in multilateral trade agreements, global trade is expected to achieve stable growth amid challenges, contributing to the continuous recovery of the global economy.
