Knowledge Classroom | Is Car Music Not Audible? The problem is most likely on the speaker!

First of all, let me ask you a question: Do you like listening to music in the car? As is well known, most original speakers in cars are unit speakers. Its structure is simple and can only represent the mid frequency range. It is characterized by low brightness in high tones and thick bass, making it a low-end product.

The role of speakers in the entire audio system is decisive, and they can even influence the style of the entire audio system. Good speakers have their own personalities. In car audio modification, replacing the main unit and replacing the speaker are the most common and basic modifications. The speaker in the car audio system serves as a restoration device to restore sound, and the quality of sound is directly reflected by the speaker. In other words, even if the entire audio system is complex, what we ultimately hear is only the sound of the speaker.

Classification of speakers:

Full frequency: capable of reproducing full frequency sound(22Hz-22Khz)

Tweeter: mainly replays the high-frequency part of the sound (6-22 Khz)

Midrange: The sound primarily replayed (200Hz-6Khz)

Bass: also known as  subwoofer (16Hz-200Hz)

Divided by size:

It can be divided into high pitched speakers such as 80mm (3in), 100mm (4in), 130mm (5in), 150mm (6in), 200mm (8in), 250mm (10in), 300mm (12in), etc. (Note 1 in=25.3mm). There are also circular shapes such as 100mm x 150mm, 130mm x 150mm, 150mm x 230mm, etc. It can be selected according to the size reserved in the car.

Characteristics of original car speakers

Entering a car audio store, in addition to a dazzling array of consoles and power amplifiers, we will also see those exquisite and unique speakers with different styles. Perhaps you may think they are the same as ordinary household audio systems, but in fact, they are not. What are the specific differences between them?

1.Temperature: Household speakers are used in rooms, so the temperature difference is small; And when cars work outdoors, with the unpredictable climate and large temperature differences, they need to resist temperature aging.
2.humidity:When a car walks on a waterway during rain, it is susceptible to moisture during washing, so car speakers need to be moisture-proof. Nowadays, moisture-proof chemical synthetic material speakers are commonly used.

3. Dust: Household appliance speakers are used in the room, so there is less dust; And there is a lot of dust inside the car, so a dust cover is needed to prevent the noise generated by the friction of the voice coil.
4. Vibration: Car speakers are subject to the vibration and impact of car movement anytime and anywhere, so they should be designed firmly and not loose.
5. Noise: Considering various noise and vibration situations, different materials are used, and various methods should be used to offset different noises.
6. Impedance: The car's power supply voltage is low, and in order to obtain high power, the impedance of the speakers is small, often using 4 Ω, 3.2 Ω, and 2 Ω

Disadvantages of original car speakers:

① Loudspeakers are cheap
The speaker of the original car audio system is composed of a paper basin, a small magnet, and a plastic basin frame. The paper basin is not resistant to high temperature, moisture, is prone to deformation, and has poor seismic resistance; Small magnets have poor magnetic force, low sensitivity, and weak driving force; Plastic basin racks are prone to twisting and have a short service life.
② No bass system
When playing music on the original car audio system, the sound feels muffled, cloudy, and the bass is thin and weak, resulting in a monotonous listening experience. Fast moving cars, tire to road friction tire noise, engine running noise, and wind cutting sound generated by collision between the body and air, make the bass even weaker.
③ Low output power
The original car's audio output power is marked as 35 watts, which is the maximum output power. The actual rated power is only 12 watts, and some cars only have two outputs, so the power is even smaller.
④ Missing frequency divider
The original car audio system lacks a frequency divider, and there is no distinction between high and low frequencies, resulting in blurry sound effects and a lack of depth in the sound.
⑤ No treble
Many cars only have one full frequency speaker without a tweeter unit, which leads to accurate sound field positioning. The voice is murky and unclear.

All music is made through a loudspeaker, like a human throat, which is the only device that converts electrical energy into sound. So, how do you choose a speaker that can produce good sound?

1. It is not necessarily better to have a higher nominal power. The higher the actual power of the speaker, the more accurate the result can only be obtained through instrument detection. To produce perfect music, a perfect match between the amplifier and the speaker is required.
2. It's not necessarily better to have more built-in components in the frequency divider of a set of speakers. The number of components cannot play a decisive role, it depends on the quality of electronic components.
3. Ensure that the horn does not burn out due to significant vibration without distortion. In the state of undistorted sound, the higher the vibration frequency of the horn, the higher its sensitivity and stronger its ability to express sound, and it will not burn out. But in a distorted state, it's a different story.
