Description
Paper has been the standard cone material for subwoofers since the first electronic loudspeaker - a glorious headphone with a horn - was replaced by a cone speaker with a balanced armature.
Paper is cheap and readily available, and if properly shielded in a large horn or bass reflex box to minimise distortion (while maintaining an effective connection to the air) and suppress bass resonance, paper cones are the ideal cone for subwoofers. This 15 inch cloth egde paper cone is suitable for subwoofers.
The paper cone itself is elastic, so the only part that follows the motion of the voice coil completely is the part that immediately surrounds it. After this small area, the bending of the paper cone absorbs more and more of the vibration until most of the original vibrational motion disappears at the edges.
